Second Grade Sea Turtles

Second Grade has learned many facts and information about sea turtles in their latest art lesson. Students also looked at pictures of many different kinds of sea turtles to help inspire their artwork as well. These little sea turtles were made from clay, mostly using pinch and rolling methods, and we made sure to pay special attention to the textures we created on them. We are in the process of glazing them now so they should be finished soon.

2nd Grade Paper Weavings

These pieces started out as texture rubbings (some with watercolor) that we turned into paper weavings. They have helped us to better understand texture and pattern. We also did peer teaching with this lesson and  the students loved working in pairs and helping each other to understand how to create the checkerboard-like pattern that was used.

2nd Grade Winter Landscapes

Second grade created these winter landscape using tempera paints and oil pastel. I demonstrated mixing tints (adding a color plus white) and shades (adding a color plus black), to create many different hues for a snowy landscape. Students learned about shadows and the appropriate way to place those on their paper for a more "real" looking painting. Details were added with oil pastel after the paint dried, which allowed for a more textured look. Their unique takes on winter landscapes make me smile! :)

2nd Grade Mixed-Up Chameleons

These cute little buggers were created by the 2nd graders. We defined a pattern, looked at patterns, even shared patterns that we've seen at home or in other places. The students then created patterns with paint markers on construction paper. We read "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle. Next, step by step, we fringed the paper, drew and cut shapes, and stapled and glued these reptiles together. Our final touch was adding the tongue.

2nd/2nd 3rd Grade Multi-age Scarecrows

2nd Grade and 2nd/3rd Grade Multi-age has been working on some watercolor scarecrows in Art. These were drawn in pencil first and then traced in Sharpie marker. Everyone created such unique scarecrows and very interesting details in the background. Next, we used only the primary colors, black, and brown for painting, so we had to mix the secondary colors. Finally, we glued some raffia in place where hay or grass might be. There may be some of these in local business windows for the Scarecrow Festival this weekend!!! (Oct 5,6, and 7)
